Mathematics: 45 Multiple-Choice Questions

1)       Understand number properties and number operations

2)       Understand fundamental principles of algebra

Writing: Two Writing Assignments—Expressive & Expository Writing

5)       Maintain a line of thought essentially free of non sequiturs, internal contradictions, unwarranted conclusions, and confusion of fact and opinion

Writing: 36 Multiple-Choice Questions and 1 Written Assignment

1)       Understand purpose, audience, organization, and development in writing

2)       Understand problems in sentence formation

3)       Understand conventions of Standard Written English grammar, usage, and mechanics

4)       In response to an assignment, demonstrate the ability to compose a developed composition in Standard Written English on a given topic

Technology Literacy: 36 Multiple-Choice Questions

1)        Understand computer operations and productivity software.

2)        Understand computer-based technology for research and communication.

Test Time

Four hours for one, two, or all three sections.

I.  Reading: One hour

II.  Writing: One hour and 15 minutes

III. Mathematics: One hour

IV. Technology Literacy: 45 minutes

 

Four hours total testing time across all four subtests

Test Dates

Paper-based: 6 administrations per year.

 

Computer-based: 12 testing windows per year; on-going testing as of August 6, 2011.

On-going. Test appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Test Sites

Paper-based in Oregon: Ashland, Bend, Eugene, La Grande, Monmouth, Ontario, Portland

 

Computer-based: over 200 sites nationwide, including Beaverton, Medford, and Salem in Oregon.

Computer-based sites are located nationwide.

 

Oregon sites: Beaverton, Medford, Salem (3rd party site @ E. Oregon University available in 2011).

Passing Score

Compensatory Scoring: The passing score for each section is a scaled score of 41. A total CBEST score of 123 is required for passing status. However, it is possible to pass the CBEST with a scaled score of 37 on one or two sections, provided that the total score is 123 or higher. It is not possible to pass the CBEST if any section score is below 37, regardless of how high the total score may be.

Each subtest is taken, scored, and reported independently. Oregon may set its own passing score for each subtest.

Test Fee

Paper-based: $41 test fee

 

Computer-based: $105 ($41 test fee and $64 computer-based test fee) required per registration.

$50 for one Essential Academic Skills subtest
$75 for any two Essential Academic Skills subtests
$100 for any three Essential Academic Skills subtests
$125 for all four Essential Academic Skills subtests

Score Reporting

Examinees: Unofficial test results for the Reading and Mathematics sections are provided at the test center.

 

Unofficial test results for all sections are emailed and posted to the CBEST Web site and official score reports are mailed 10 business days after the end of each testing window on the published score report date.

 

Institutions and the TSPC: Same day as release of examinee score reports; cumulative test and registration data provided through Results Analyzer™.

A scaled score is provided immediately after testing at the test center for the Reading, Mathematics and Technology Literacy Subtests; detailed score reports are released electronically within two weeks of testing for multiple-choice only subtests and within four weeks of testing for Subtest II: Writing.

 

Institutions and the TSPC: Same day as release of detailed score reports; cumulative test and registration data provided through Results Analyzer™.

Retake Policy

Paper-based: no limitations; examinees may test on all occasions.

 

Computer-based: 120 days; 90 days as of August 6, 2010; does not limit paper-based registration.

 

Examinees register for and pay the full test fee for all three sections of the test and may skip sections previously passed during testing.
